Job Overview

The Locum Urology Registrar provides senior‑level support within the urological service, managing patients with benign and malignant urological conditions across wards, theatres, outpatient clinics, and emergency referrals. The role involves leading ward‑based care, assisting in complex procedures, and supervising junior doctors under consultant supervision. This position is ideal for experienced urology registrars seeking flexible locum work in busy Irish urology units.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the assessment and management of patients with haematuria, urinary‑tract infection, benign prostatic hyperplasia, renal and ureteric stones, uro‑oncology (bladder, prostate, renal, testicular), and urinary‑tract obstruction.
  • Assist and participate in, or where appropriate lead, elective and emergency urological procedures (cystoscopy, transurethral resection, nephrectomy, cystectomy, and stone‑related surgery) under consultant supervision.
  • Supervise and support SHOs and junior medical staff on wards, in clinics, and in theatre.
  • Participate in ward rounds, consultant rounds, and urology‑related MDTs (e.g., oncology, nephrology, oncologic‑surgery boards).
  • Review and follow up investigations such as urine studies, blood tests, ultrasound, CT‑KUB/uro, and MRI.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including admission notes, progress charts, and discharge summaries.
  • Respond to urological emergencies (e.g., upper‑tract obstruction, acute urinary retention, sepsis, genitourinary trauma).
  • Uphold patient‑safety, infection‑control, and clinical‑governance standards in the urology service.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration at registrar or equivalent NCHD level in urology or general surgery with urology rotations.
  • Previous experience in urology, uro‑oncology, or general surgery in an acute hospital setting.
  • Strong understanding of common urological pathologies and peri‑operative care.
  • Eligibility to locum in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
