Job Overview

The Locum Radiology SHO supports the radiology department in the clinical assessment, work‑up, and coordination of patients undergoing imaging and image‑guided procedures. The role involves close collaboration with radiologists, radiographers, oncologists, surgeons, and medical teams to ensure safe, timely imaging‑related care and communication of urgent findings. This position is ideal for doctors seeking flexible locum experience in a busy radiology service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the justification and clinical work‑up of patients referred for X‑ray, ultrasound, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, and interventional procedures.
  • Review referral forms and patient histories, and escalate requests that require urgent imaging or consultant input.
  • Liaise with clinical teams to coordinate inpatient and outpatient imaging pathways and prioritise urgent requests.
  • Support the reporting and follow‑up process by checking study completion, flagging outstanding reports, and ensuring timely communication of critical findings to referring teams.
  • Assist consultants and registrars with image‑guided procedures and ward/bedside imaging where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and patient‑flow records related to the radiology service.
  • Participate in handovers and multidisciplinary meetings where radiology contributes to diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Help ensure safe radiation‑protection and infection‑control practices are followed across the department.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration or eligibility for registration at SHO/NCHD level.
  • Previous experience in a hospital setting, preferably with exposure to radiology, medicine, or surgery.
  • Basic understanding of common imaging modalities and clinical indications.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
