Job Overview

The Locum Consultant Radiologist provides senior‑level leadership across the diagnostic and interventional radiology service, including cross‑sectional imaging (CT, MRI), ultrasound, nuclear medicine, breast imaging, and interventional radiology where specified. The role involves leading image interpretation, multidisciplinary case discussion, teaching, and quality‑assurance activities within a large acute or teaching‑hospital setting. This position suits experienced radiologists seeking flexible locum work in major Irish imaging services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant‑level interpretation and reporting of X‑ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, breast imaging, nuclear medicine, PET/CT, and interventional‑related studies across clinical specialties.
  • Participate in on‑site and on‑call radiology cover, including acute and emergency imaging and urgent interventional procedures.
  • Attend and contribute to radiology and clinical MDT meetings, oncology‑related, surgical, and medical boards.
  • Mentor and teach radiology registrars, SHOs, and allied‑health professionals, including participation in formal training programmes.
  • Contribute to departmental quality‑assurance, audit, and accreditation initiatives, including radiation‑safety and procedural‑safety projects.
  • Support the development and implementation of best‑practice guidelines for imaging pathways and protocols.
  • Maintain accurate, timely reports and documentation in line with HSE and HIQA standards.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • Full Specialist Registration in Radiology on the Specialist Division of the IMC Register (or equivalent plus eligibility to obtain it).
  • Consultant‑level experience in diagnostic and/or interventional radiology, including cross‑sectional imaging.
  • Subspecialty experience (e.g., breast, neuro, oncology, interventional radiology) may be required depending on the post.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland (Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills.

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced interpretative and analytical skills in multiple imaging modalities.
  • Leadership and team‑management experience in a busy radiology department.
  • Comfort with high‑volume reporting and emergency/as‑required calls.
  • Excellent communication with clinicians and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong commitment to quality‑improvement, teaching, and continuous professional development.

Working Conditions

  • Consultant‑level rota aligned with HSE Public‑Only Consultant 2023 (POCC23) principles (e.g., 39‑hour clinical commitment, on‑call duties, depending on the post).
  • Diagnostic Imaging Directorate environment with CT, MRI, ultrasound, interventional radiology, breast‑imaging, and nuclear‑medicine services.
  • May involve work at a single major teaching hospital or across multiple regional sites.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Highly competitive locum consultant rates, up to €133 per hour and often aligned with or above HSE POCC23 pay scales (pro‑rated to hours).
