Job Overview
The Locum Pathology SHO supports the pathology department in the laboratory‑based assessment, processing, and reporting of histological, cytological, and/or haematological specimens. The role works closely with consultant pathologists, biomedical scientists, and laboratory staff, providing basic clinical and administrative support for diagnostic pathology services. This position is ideal for doctors seeking flexible locum work while gaining exposure to laboratory medicine.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the grossing, dissection, and documentation of surgical specimens under consultant or senior pathologist supervision where appropriate.
- Participate in the clerking and tracking of pathology requests from clinical teams, ensuring timely and accurate specimen handling.
- Prepare and support haematology/countroom‑oriented duties such as peripheral blood‑film review, basic cytology, and routine haematology tasks under protocol.
- Liaise with clinical teams regarding specimen requirements, urgent requests, and initial pathology findings.
- Maintain accurate documentation in laboratory and associated systems (LIS/EMR).
- Support the department’s quality‑improvement and audit initiatives.
- Assist in the education and orientation of junior medical or paramedical staff in laboratory procedures and safety.
- Uphold strict health‑and‑safety, bio‑hazard, and infection‑control standards throughout the pathology environment.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- IMC registration or eligibility for registration at SHO/NCHD level.
- Interest in pathology, haematology, or laboratory‑based medicine; prior pathology or haematology rotation experience is highly desirable.
- Basic understanding of histopathology, cytology, or haematological morphology.
- Strong attention to detail, organisation, and documentation skills.
- Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
