Job Overview
The Locum Paediatrics SHO supports the paediatric team in the assessment, investigation, and management of children and young people in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings. The role involves working closely with consultants, registrars, nurses, and allied health professionals to deliver high‑quality, family‑centred paediatric care. This position is well suited to doctors seeking flexible locum work while gaining experience in paediatrics.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and clerking children presenting to paediatric wards, paediatric emergency, and outpatient clinics.
- Assist in the management of common paediatric conditions such as respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, fever, seizures, child protection concerns, and chronic illnesses.
- Contribute to daily ward reviews, discharge planning, and follow‑up care.
- Order and review basic investigations (bloods, cultures, imaging, etc.) and escalate abnormal findings promptly.
- Respond to urgent paediatric cases and participate in paediatric emergency or resuscitation calls as directed.
- Support registrars and consultants in clinics, procedures, and ward‑based work.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including admission notes, progress charts, and discharge summaries.
- Escalate unwell children and discuss complex cases with senior paediatric staff.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, social work, and paediatric specialists.
- Uphold infection control, child protection, and patient‑safety standards in line with HSE/Hiqa guidance.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- IMC registration or eligibility for registration at SHO/NCHD level.
- Previous experience in paediatrics, acute medicine, or a relevant hospital setting.
- Understanding of common paediatric presentations and basic paediatric examinations.
- Strong communication skills with children, families, and colleagues.
- Eligibility to locum in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4 GNIB‑style visa).
- Ability to work effectively in a busy paediatric environment.
