Job Overview

The Locum Ophthalmology Registrar provides senior clinical support within the ophthalmology service, managing patients with a wide range of acute and chronic eye conditions across clinics, wards, and emergency eye services. The role involves working closely with consultants, SHOs, nurses, orthoptists, and theatre staff to ensure safe, timely, and high-quality ophthalmic care. This position is well suited to doctors with previous ophthalmology experience who are seeking flexible locum work in a busy Irish hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and manage patients presenting to ophthalmology clinics, emergency eye services, wards, and theatre lists.
  • Review and follow up patients with red eye, ocular trauma, glaucoma, cataracts, retinal disease, diabetic eye disease, and other ophthalmic conditions.
  • Support emergency ophthalmology assessments and escalate sight-threatening cases promptly.
  • Interpret investigations such as ocular imaging, visual field testing, OCT, blood work, and other relevant diagnostics.
  • Assist consultants and provide procedural support where required.
  • Supervise and support SHOs and junior doctors in the ophthalmology service.
  • Participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and multidisciplinary discussions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, clinic letters, discharge summaries, and follow-up plans.
  • Work collaboratively with theatre, nursing, orthoptic, and allied health teams.
  • Uphold patient safety, infection control, and clinical governance standards.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognized by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration or eligibility for registration at registrar level.
  • Previous experience in ophthalmology or related surgical/acute hospital specialties.
  • Strong understanding of common ophthalmic conditions and emergency eye presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced hospital environment.
  • Good communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.
  • Right to work in Ireland, where required by the employer or agency.
