Job Overview
The Locum Consultant Oncologist provides senior‑level leadership across the oncology service, managing patients with solid and haematological malignancies in inpatient, outpatient, and day‑treatment settings. The role combines clinical care, supervision of junior doctors, participation in multidisciplinary tumour boards, and support for oncology‑service development in a large acute or teaching hospital. This position is suited to experienced oncologists seeking flexible consultant‑level locum work in Ireland.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist medical opinion and lead the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with a broad range of cancers, including breast, lung, colorectal, uro‑oncology, and other solid‑organ or haematological malignancies.
- Oversee and participate in the administration of systemic anticancer therapy (chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and hormone therapy) and support patients through treatment‑related toxicities.
- Lead ward and consult‑ward rounds, ambulatory day‑ward reviews, and outpatient oncology clinics.
- Supervise and be clinically responsible for diagnosis, treatment, and care delivered by non‑consultant hospital doctors (registrar, SHO, and trainees).
- Participate in and contribute to oncology‑related MDTs, tumour‑boards, and site‑specific cancer‑service meetings.
- Take part in the oncology department’s shared on‑call commitment and acute oncology cover.
- Contribute to service planning, quality‑improvement initiatives, and the implementation of new treatment protocols and service‑delivery models in line with HSE/National Cancer Control Programme standards.
- Uphold safe prescribing, transfusion safety, infection‑control, and patient‑safety protocols within the oncology service.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- Full Specialist Registration in Medical Oncology or Clinical Oncology on the Specialist Division of the IMC Register.
- Consultant‑level experience in oncology within HSE, NHS, or equivalent hospital systems.
- Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
- Strong leadership, communication, teaching, and multidisciplinary‑team skills.
- Commitment to patient‑centred, evidence‑based cancer care and continuous learning.

Working Conditions
- Consultant‑level rota aligned with HSE Public‑Only Consultant 2023 (POCC23)‑type hours (e.g., 37 hours per week clinical commitment, including scheduled on‑call).
- Large oncology and acute‑oncology service within a teaching or regional hospital, including inpatient wards, ambulatory day wards, and outpatient clinics.
- Multidisciplinary oncology environment with frequent handovers and high‑volume cancer‑referral pathways.
