Job Overview

The Locum Minor Injury SHO provides primary clinical support in a minor injuries or urgent‑care setting, assessing and managing patients with non‑life‑threatening injuries and acute conditions. The role involves working alongside emergency/acute‑care consultants, registrars, nurses, and allied health professionals to deliver safe, efficient, and patient‑centred care. This position is ideal for doctors seeking flexible locum work in a fast‑paced, high‑throughput environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clerking and assessing patients presenting with minor injuries, sprains, strains, lacerations, fractures, burns, bites, infections, and simple acute medical problems.
  • Conducting focused examinations, ordering and reviewing basic investigations (X‑ray, bloods, wound swabs), and providing appropriate treatment and discharge advice.
  • Performing wound management, suturing, wound closure, immobilisation, and basic fracture/soft‑tissue care under protocol‑driven supervision.
  • Participating in urgent‑care/minor‑injuries shift work, including evenings, weekends, and bank‑holiday cover where required.
  • Escalating complex, high‑acuity, or potentially serious presentations promptly to senior emergency/acute‑care staff.
  • Maintaining clear, accurate documentation and discharge summaries for all patients.
  • Responding to minor‑injuries and walk‑in‑type emergencies as part of the minor‑injuries team.
  • Collaborating with nursing, radiography, and allied health teams to coordinate care and referrals.
  • Upholding infection‑control, aseptic, and patient‑safety standards in the minor injuries/urgent care setting.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration or eligibility for registration at SHO/NCHD level.
  • Previous experience in emergency medicine, emergency department, minor‑injuries, or general practice‑type acute care is highly desirable.
  • Comfort with suturing, wound care, basic fracture management, and splinting.
  • Strong clinical assessment, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).

Skills and Competencies

  • Sound clinical judgment and ability to distinguish true emergencies from minor‑injury presentations.
  • Confidence managing undifferentiated, time‑sensitive, minor‑injuries cases.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high‑volume, fast‑paced urgent care environment.
  • Professional, adaptable, and reliable approach to locum work.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills with patients and multidisciplinary colleagues.

Working Conditions

  • Shift‑based rota, often including day, evening, weekend, and bank‑holiday sessions aligned with urgent care or ED patterns.
  • Minor injuries unit, urgent care centre, or ED‑style walk‑in setting with a mix of trauma, soft‑tissue, and simple acute‑medical cases.
  • High patient‑flow environment with regular handovers and focus on rapid assessment and treatment.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Competitive locum hourly rates, typically in the €49–€62 per hour band depending on experience, shift‑type, and hospital/agency.
  • Flexible scheduling to suit availability and interest in regular or ad‑hoc shift work.
  • Opportunity to gain experience in a broad range of minor injuries and acute‑care presentations.

  • 2 - 3 years of experience
