Job Overview

The Locum Internal Medicine SHO supports the general/internal medicine team in the assessment, investigation, and management of acutely unwell medical patients admitted to the hospital. The role involves working closely with consultants, registrars, nurses, and allied health professionals to deliver safe, high‑quality, protocol‑driven care across medical specialities. This position is ideal for doctors seeking flexible locum work while gaining broad internal‑medicine experience in an Irish hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the assessment and clerking of patients presenting to medical wards, Emergency Department, and medical on‑call services.
  • Support the management of common medical conditions such as respiratory infections, cardiac disease, gastrointestinal illness, renal problems, diabetes, and sepsis.
  • Participate in ward rounds, consultant visits, and multidisciplinary reviews.
  • Order and review basic investigations (bloods, ECG, imaging, etc.) and escalate abnormal findings promptly.
  • Assist consultants and registrars with medical emergencies, including rapid‑response and resuscitation calls where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including admission notes, progress charts, and discharge summaries.
  • Escalate unwell or deteriorating patients promptly and participate in handovers.
  • Work collaboratively with nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and other specialties.
  • Uphold infection control, patient‑safety, and clinical‑governance standards in line with HSE and Hiqa guidelines.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration or eligibility for registration at SHO/NCHD level.
  • Previous experience in internal/general medicine, acute medicine, or a related hospital setting.
  • Good understanding of common medical conditions and basic acute‑care skills.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Eligibility to locum in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, high‑volume medical environment.
