Job Overview
The Locum Intensive Care Medicine SHO supports the ICU team in the assessment, monitoring, and management of critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit. The role involves close collaboration with consultants, registrars, nurses, and allied health professionals to deliver safe, high‑quality, protocol‑driven critical care. This position is ideal for doctors seeking flexible locum work while gaining experience in a busy ICU environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the assessment and ongoing care of critically ill medical and surgical patients, including those with sepsis, respiratory failure, post‑operative complications, and multi‑organ support.
- Monitor vital signs, ventilator settings, haemodynamic parameters, and laboratory results, and escalate changes promptly.
- Assist consultants and registrars with procedures such as arterial line management, central lines, basic airway support, and other bedside critical‑care tasks.
- Order and review basic investigations (bloods, arterial blood gases, chest X‑rays, etc.), and interpret trends under supervision.
- Participate in airway and rapid‑response calls and support resuscitation efforts as directed.
- Maintain accurate documentation in ICU charts, including ventilator settings, fluid balance, and nursing/medical interventions.
- Escalate unstable patients or concerning trends immediately to senior intensive‑care staff.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including nursing, respiratory therapy, physiotherapy, and pharmacy.
- Uphold infection‑control, patient‑safety, and sedation‑monitoring protocols in the ICU.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- IMC registration or eligibility for registration at SHO/NCHD level.
- Previous experience in acute medicine, anaesthesia, emergency medicine, or surgery in an ICU‑aware setting.
- Minimum ICU or critical‑care exposure is often preferred (e.g., 3+ months’ experience).
- Strong clinical assessment, prioritisation, and documentation skills.
- Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).

- Frequent multidisciplinary handovers and high‑level documentation demands.
