Job Overview
The Locum Intensive Care Medicine Registrar provides senior‑level critical‑care support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), managing complex, critically ill medical and surgical patients under consultant supervision. The role sits at the core of the ICU team, responsible for continuous monitoring, ventilation management, advanced procedures, and supervision of junior doctors. This position is ideal for experienced registrars in medicine, anaesthesia, or emergency medicine seeking flexible locum work in a busy Irish ICU.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the assessment and management of critically ill patients (sepsis, respiratory failure, multi‑organ failure, post‑operative, trauma, and cardiac cases) in the ICU.
- Perform and supervise advanced life‑support procedures such as intubation, central‑line insertion, arterial‑line placement, and ventilator management where appropriate.
- Interpret haemodynamic and ventilator data, ABGs, imaging, and laboratory results, escalating to consultants when required.
- Supervise and support SHOs and junior medical staff in ward and ICU settings.
- Respond to airway, rapid‑response, and code‑blue emergencies and coordinate resuscitation under consultant guidance.
- Maintain accurate, protocol‑driven documentation in ICU charts, treatment plans, and nursing‑medical handover records.
- Participate in ward rounds, case discussions, and multidisciplinary critical‑care meetings.
- Uphold strict infection‑control, sedation‑monitoring, and patient‑safety standards in the ICU.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- Full IMC registration at registrar level (e.g., in General Medicine, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, or Surgery) with prior critical‑care exposure.
- Proven experience managing ventilated and haemodynamically unstable patients, ideally including ICU rotations or fellowships.
- Eligibility to locum in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
- Strong clinical judgment, teamwork, and communication skills.
- Commitment to continuous learning and high‑quality, evidence‑based critical care.
Skills and Competencies
- Advanced clinical decision‑making and ability to manage high‑acuity, time‑sensitive cases.
- Confidence with advanced airway and resuscitation procedures.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills with junior staff.
- Excellent organisational and documentation skills in a high‑pressure environment.
- Professionalism and resilience in managing complex, often emotional, ICU situations.
Working Conditions
- Shift‑based rota, often including 12‑hour ICU shifts (day, evening, and night), with participation in on‑call and cross‑cover as required.
- Busy ICU with exposure to ventilated patients, post‑operative, trauma, and medical‑critical‑care cases.
- High‑level documentation, frequent handovers, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Remuneration and Benefits
- Competitive locum hourly rates, typically in the €54–€71 per hour band depending on experience, site, and shift‑type (nights, weekends, bank holidays).
- Flexible working arrangements and opportunities to extend or rotate between ICU locums across Ireland.
Experience
- 3 - 5 years of experience
Salary range
- €54 - €65 per hour
