Job Overview

The Locum Haematology Registrar provides senior‑level support within the haematology service, managing patients with benign and malignant blood disorders across wards, clinics, day units, and emergency referrals. The role involves supervising junior doctors, coordinating investigations and treatment plans, and working closely with oncology, transfusion, and laboratory teams. This position is ideal for experienced registrars seeking flexible locum work in a busy Irish haematology service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the assessment and management of patients with anaemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, bleeding disorders, thrombosis, leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma, and other haematological conditions.
  • Review and interpret full blood counts, coagulation profiles, haematinics, blood films, and relevant pathology results.
  • Manage inpatient and outpatient haematology reviews, including chemotherapy support and transfusion-related care.
  • Support patients receiving active treatment for haematological malignancies and those undergoing bone marrow or diagnostic investigations.
  • Supervise and support SHOs and junior medical staff in ward, day-unit, and on-call settings.
  • Participate in ward rounds, multidisciplinary meetings, and oncology/haematology case discussions.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, including progress notes, admission notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Escalate unstable patients, abnormal results, or treatment complications promptly to consultant staff.
  • Work collaboratively with nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, oncology, and transfusion teams.
  • Uphold transfusion safety, infection control, and clinical governance standards.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration at registrar level or equivalent NCHD grade.
  • Previous experience in haematology, oncology, internal medicine, or a related acute specialty.
  • Strong knowledge of common blood disorders, chemotherapy support, and transfusion medicine.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced tertiary‑care environment.
