Job Overview

The Locum Consultant Haematologist provides senior‑level leadership across the haematology service, managing benign and malignant blood disorders, overseeing laboratory‑based diagnostics, and supervising NCHD trainees in a large acute or teaching hospital. The role combines clinical ward/clinic work with haematology laboratory responsibility and is central to haematological‑malignancy, transfusion, and blood‑disorder services. This position is suited to experienced haematologists seeking flexible consultant‑level locum work in Ireland.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the assessment and management of patients with anaemia, coagulation disorders, haemoglobinopathies, and haematological malignancies (leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes).
  • Oversee diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow‑up for patients receiving chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and transfusion support.
  • Provide clinical and laboratory‑based oversight of bone‑marrow assessment, blood‑film review, coagulation testing, and related haematology investigations.
  • Supervise and train registrars, SHOs, and allied‑health professionals, including participation in formal teaching and training programmes.
  • Attend and contribute to haematology‑oncology MDTs, transfusion committees, and multidisciplinary cancer boards.
  • Participate in on‑call and rota‑based haematology cover, including haematology‑oncology emergencies and critical‑bleeding/thrombosis cases.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, treatment‑plan records, and adherence to national and HSE/Hiqa guidelines.
  • Uphold transfusion safety, infection‑control, and quality‑assurance standards within the haematology and transfusion services.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • Full Specialist Registration in Haematology (clinical and/or laboratory) on the Specialist Division of the IMC Register.
  • Consultant‑level experience in haematology, including malignant haematology, transfusion medicine, and laboratory‑based diagnostics.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and teaching skills.
  • Commitment to patient‑centred, evidence‑based haematology care.

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced clinical and laboratory‑diagnostic judgment in complex blood disorders.
  • Leadership and team‑management experience in a busy haematology unit.
  • Comfort with managing acutely unwell and immunocompromised haematology‑oncology patients.
  • Excellent communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Professionalism, resilience, and adaptability in high‑pressure situations.

Working Conditions

  • Consultant‑level rota aligned with HSE Public‑Only Consultant 2023 (POCC23)‑style hours (e.g., part‑time or whole‑time depending on the post).
  • Large haematology and oncology department with inpatient wards, day‑treatment units, outpatient clinics, and a dedicated haematological laboratory.
  • Multidisciplinary environment with frequent handovers and high‑volume haematology/oncology referrals.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Highly competitive consultant‑level remuneration, depending on experience and hospital.
  • Flexible, time‑limited contracts with potential for extension or rotation.
  • Opportunity to work in major teaching hospitals and regional cancer center services in Ireland.
