Locum Cardiology Consultant

Job Overview

The Locum Cardiology Consultant is responsible for delivering expert specialist care for patients with acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions. The role involves leading cardiology services, making complex clinical decisions, supervising multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring high standards of patient care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings. This position is suited to experienced cardiologists seeking flexible consultant-level locum work in Ireland.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide consultant-level assessment and management of patients with a wide range of cardiac conditions.
• Lead ward rounds, outpatient clinics, CCU reviews, and emergency cardiology assessments.
• Diagnose and manage conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, hypertension, valvular disease, and syncope.
• Interpret and oversee cardiac investigations including ECGs, echocardiograms, stress tests, telemetry, and blood results.
• Support interventional and non-invasive cardiology pathways where applicable.
• Make senior clinical decisions regarding admission, escalation, transfer, discharge, and treatment planning.
• Provide specialist advice to ED, ICU, medical wards, and referring teams.
• Supervise and support registrars, SHOs, and other junior clinicians.
• Participate in on-call rota, urgent consultations, and emergency cover as required.
• Lead multidisciplinary meetings, audit, governance, and quality improvement activities.
• Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with hospital and Medical Council standards.
• Contribute to teaching, training, and service development.

Essential Requirements

• Medical degree recognized by the Irish Medical Council.
• Specialist registration in Cardiology or eligibility for consultant registration.
• Significant post-specialist experience in cardiology.
• Proven ability to manage complex cardiac cases independently.
• Experience in acute cardiology, CCU, or general internal medicine is desirable.
• Current ALS/ACLS certification; additional advanced life support or procedural training may be required.
• Eligibility to work in Ireland.
