The Locum Consultant Anaesthesiologist is responsible for delivering consultant-led anaesthetic services across elective, emergency, and critical care pathways. The post holder will provide expert peri-operative assessment, anaesthetic care, post-operative follow-up, and support for pain management and resuscitation services. This role requires strong clinical leadership, independent decision-making, and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-level anaesthetic care for elective and emergency surgical cases.
- Conduct pre-operative assessments, optimise patients, and develop anaesthetic plans.
- Deliver intra-operative anaesthesia, including advanced airway management and crisis response.
- Manage post-operative recovery, complications, and follow-up where required.
- Participate in on-call rota and emergency anaesthesia cover.
- Contribute to ICU/critical care support when needed.
- Support acute pain service, regional anaesthesia, and peri-operative pain management.
- Lead, supervise, and support junior doctors, trainees, and theatre staff.
- Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings, audit, governance, and clinical quality improvement.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and comply with HSE, hospital, and Medical Council standards.
- Contribute to teaching, training, and service development.
Essential Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- Specialist registration in Anaesthesiology with the Irish Medical Council, or eligibility for same.
- Significant post-graduate experience in anaesthesia at consultant level or equivalent.
- Demonstrated competence in general, emergency, and peri-operative anaesthetic practice.
- Experience in ICU, pain management, or subspecialty anaesthesia is desirable.
- Current ALS/ACLS certification; ATLS or equivalent may be required depending on the site.
- Eligibility to work in Ireland.

Working Conditions
