Job Overview

The Locum Haematology SHO supports the haematology team in the assessment, investigation, and management of patients with haematological and oncological conditions, including anaemia, coagulation disorders, leukaemias, lymphomas, and transfusion‑related issues. The role involves close collaboration with consultants, registrars, oncology teams, and laboratory staff to deliver safe and protocol‑driven blood‑disease care. Key Responsibilities

• Assist in the clerking and ongoing care of inpatients and outpatients with benign and malignant haematological conditions, including anaemia, bleeding disorders, clotting disorders, and myeloid/lymphoid malignancies.
• Support the management of patients undergoing chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and stem‑cell transplantation where available.
• Participate in ward rounds, consultant visits, and haematology/oncology multidisciplinary meetings.
• Order and review basic haematological and serological investigations, including FBC, coagulation profiles, haematinics, and review of pathology and bone‑marrow reports under supervision.
• Assist in the supervision of transfusion medicine aspects, including blood‑bank liaison, transfusion orders, and documentation of transfusion episodes.
• Maintain accurate documentation, including admission notes, treatment‑documentation charts, and discharge summaries.
• Escalate deteriorating patients or abnormal results promptly to senior haematology staff.
• Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including nursing, oncology pharmacy, microbiology, and laboratory services.
• Uphold infection‑control, patient‑safety, and transfusion‑safety standards in line with national and HSE/Hiqa guidelines.

Requirements

• Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
• IMC registration or eligibility for registration at SHO/NCHD level.
• Previous experience in internal/general medicine, oncology, or haematology‑related rotations is highly desirable.
• Basic understanding of haematological conditions, transfusion principles, and cancer supportive care.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.
• Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
