Job Overview

The Locum Oncology Registrar provides senior‑level support within the oncology service, managing patients with solid and haematological malignancies across inpatient, outpatient, and day‑treatment settings. The role involves close collaboration with consultants, registrars, oncology nurses, and allied health professionals to deliver protocol‑driven cancer care. This position is ideal for experienced registrars seeking flexible locum work in busy Irish oncology services.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the assessment and management of patients with various cancers, including breast, lung, colorectal, uro‑oncology, and other malignancies, under consultant supervision.
• Coordinate and review investigations and treatment plans, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, and immunotherapy.
• Supervise and support SHOs and junior medical staff in ward, day‑unit, and on‑call settings.
• Participate in ward rounds, multidisciplinary oncology meetings (tumour boards), and case discussions.
• Order and review relevant investigations (bloods, tumour markers, imaging, etc.) and escalate abnormal findings promptly.
• Respond to oncology‑related emergencies and rapid‑response calls.
• Maintain accurate documentation, including progress notes, admission notes, and discharge summaries.
• Escalate deteriorating patients or treatment‑related toxicities immediately to senior oncology staff.
• Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including nursing, pharmacy, radiology, and palliative care services.
• Uphold infection‑control, patient‑safety, and chemotherapy‑safety protocols in line with national and HSE/Hiqa guidelines.

Requirements

• Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
• IMC registration at registrar level or equivalent NCHD grade.
• Previous experience in oncology, haematology, or internal/general medicine in an acute hospital setting.
• Strong understanding of common cancers and oncology‑supportive care.
• Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
• Excellent communication, teamwork, and organisational skills.
• Commitment to continuous learning and high‑quality, patient‑centred cancer care.
