Role Purpose
The Social Care Worker will support children and young people living in residential care across both mainstream and disability/intellectual disability settings.
The role focuses on delivering high-quality, trauma-informed, person-centred care that promotes safety, wellbeing, independence and positive outcomes.
Working within a multidisciplinary environment, the Social Care Worker contributes to safe, nurturing, developmentally appropriate homes where children feel valued, empowered and supported.
Key Responsibilities
- Build safe, trusting, therapeutic relationships using trauma-informed and attachment-based approaches.
- Support with daily routines, education, self-care, independent living skills, community access and meaningful activities.
- Implement individual care plans, placement plans, communication supports and behaviour support strategies.
- Promote independence and social inclusion tailored to each child's developmental level and abilities.
- Provide personal care and assist with mobility or specialist equipment when supporting children with disabilities.
- Implement Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans and follow guidance from multidisciplinary clinicians.
- Support emotional regulation, resilience building and positive coping strategies.
- Respond effectively to crises using approved de-escalation methods (TCI/CPI/PBM/low arousal).
- Accompany children to medical, therapeutic or educational appointments as required.
- Adhere to Children First, organisational safeguarding procedures and all relevant legislation.
- Maintain high-quality records including daily notes, significant events, incidents, PBS logs and care updates.
- Participate in HIQA inspections, audits, risk assessments and compliance reviews.
Essential
- Level 7 or 8 qualification in Social Care or equivalent recognised for CORU registration.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice, attachment theory, child development and rights-based care.
- Understanding of supporting children in mainstream or disability settings.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and report-writing skills.
- Full driving licence.
- Flexibility to work across a roster including evenings, weekends, nights and sleepovers.
Desirable
- Experience in residential childcare or disability services.
- Training in TCI, CPI, PBM, low-arousal approaches, PBS, LÁMH, PECS or similar communication supports.
- Familiarity with HIQA standards for Children's Residential Centres and Disability Services.
