Job Overview
The Locum Pathology Consultant provides senior‑level diagnostic and leadership support within a hospital pathology department, delivering expert opinion on histopathology, haematology, microbiology, virology, or related subspecialty work. The role reports to the relevant consultant‑lead and is typically advertised as a temporary, public‑only or agency‑facilitated consultant post, with salaries commonly in the €220,000–€280,000 per‑year band in Ireland.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide independent, consultant‑level reporting and interpretation of histopathology, haematology, microbiology, virology, or specialised pathology specimens in line with current guidelines.
- Lead the multidisciplinary management of complex cases (e.g., cancer, perinatal, dermatopathology, or infectious‑disease‑related pathology) and contribute to specialist MDTs.
- Participate in on‑call and advisory services for surgical, oncology, obstetrics, and infectious‑diseases teams as required by the department.
- Oversee and quality‑assure the work of registrars, SHOs, and laboratory staff, ensuring safe and accurate reporting.
- Maintain an active role in audit, quality‑improvement, and hospital‑based clinical governance activities within the pathology service.
- Contribute to continuous professional development of technical and scientific staff, and participate in teaching and training programmes.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- Full IMC registration in the Specialist Division in the relevant pathology specialty (Histopathology, Microbiology, Haematology, Virology, etc.).
- At least 1–2 years of consultant‑level experience in the relevant pathology subspecialty (e.g., breast histopathology, perinatal pathology, virology, or microbiology).
- Demonstrated experience in a busy hospital or academic pathology environment.
- Strong documentation, communication, and leadership skills.
- Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
Skills and Competencies
- Expert diagnostic judgment and interpretation of complex pathology specimens.
- Leadership and managerial ability in a multidisciplinary pathology and laboratory setting.
- Comfort with high‑throughput diagnostic workflows and complex reporting demands.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with clinical teams, laboratory staff, and hospital management.
Working Conditions
- Consultant‑level rota, typically around 37 hours per week, with possible on‑call or advisory duties depending on the laboratory structure.
