Job Overview
The Locum Obstetrics & Gynaecology SHO supports the obstetric and gynaecological team in assessing, managing, and following up women in antenatal, labour, postnatal, and gynaecology settings. The role involves working closely with consultants, registrars, midwives, and nursing staff to provide safe, high‑quality, patient‑centred maternity and women’s health care. This position is well suited to doctors seeking flexible locum work while gaining experience in busy maternity and gynaecology services.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the assessment and clerking of patients attending antenatal clinics, gynaecology outpatients, and emergency gynaecology services.
- Participate in day‑to‑day ward care for antenatal and postnatal patients, including induction of labour, post‑operative gynaecology care, and early pregnancy assessment.
- Support the labour ward team in monitoring labour, basic obstetric emergencies, and post‑partum care under supervision.
- Assist consultants and registrars with gynaecological and obstetric procedures and theatre lists.
- Order, review, and follow up investigations such as blood tests, ultrasound reports, and smears, escalating abnormalities appropriately.
- Escalate unwell obstetric or gynaecology patients promptly and participate in multidisciplinary reviews.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including admission notes, progress charts, and discharge summaries.
- Support junior house officers and coordinate with midwifery and nursing teams.
- Uphold infection control, maternity safety, and clinical‑governance standards in line with HSE/Hiqa guidelines.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- IMC registration or eligibility for registration at SHO/NCHD level.
- Previous experience in obstetrics, gynaecology, or general medicine in an acute hospital setting.
- Basic understanding of antenatal care, labour ward, postnatal care, and common gynaecological conditions.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced maternity and gynaecology environment.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or appropriate visa/permit).
