Job Overview
The Locum Neurosurgery Registrar provides senior‑level neurosurgical care under consultant supervision across inpatient, outpatient and theatre settings. The role involves leading the management of complex neurosurgical cases, supervising junior doctors, and supporting both emergency and elective neurosurgical services. This position is ideal for experienced neurosurgery registrars seeking flexible locum work in a high‑acuity hospital environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the assessment and management of patients admitted to neurosurgery, including brain injury, spinal injury, tumours, hydrocephalus, aneurysms, and degenerative spine disease.
- Conduct detailed clerking, formulate management plans, and review imaging (CT, MRI) and other investigations, escalating as required.
- Participate in and, where appropriate, lead neurosurgical procedures under consultant supervision, including cranial and spinal operations.
- Provide ward‑based care, including regular reviews, post‑operative monitoring, and discharge planning.
- Assist and supervise SHOs and other junior medical staff on the wards and in theatre.
- Participate in outpatient clinics, MDT meetings, and neurosurgical case discussions.
- Cover on‑call rota, including emergency admissions and urgent referrals from ED, ICU, and other departments.
- Ensure accurate documentation, operative notes, and clinical records in line with hospital and HSE standards.
- Contribute to clinical governance, audit, teaching, and service development.
- Uphold infection control, patient‑safety, and risk‑management protocols in the neurosurgical unit.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- IMC registration at registrar/specialist level or equivalent, with neurosurgery experience.
- Significant post‑graduate experience in neurosurgery or equivalent surgical training.
- Demonstrated competence in managing neurosurgical patients in both emergency and elective settings.
- Strong clinical, leadership, and teaching skills.
- Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or appropriate work permit/visa).
