Job Overview
The Locum Consultant in Internal Medicine provides senior‑level leadership for the general/internal medicine service, managing complex medical inpatients, supervising registrars and SHOs, and supporting acute assessment and medical‑on‑call functions. The role is core to the medical division in large or regional hospitals and offers flexible, high‑impact locum work for experienced consultants.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant‑level assessment and management of patients with a broad range of medical conditions, including respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine, infectious‑disease, and undifferentiated presentations.
- Lead ward round activities, multidisciplinary case reviews, and participate in acute medical‑assessment‑unit (AMAU) work where applicable.
- Supervise and mentor registrars, SHOs, and junior medical staff in diagnostic reasoning, treatment planning, and safe prescribing.
- Participate in on‑call and rota‑based medical cover, including rapid‑response and resuscitation duties.
- Support discharge planning, referrals to specialty services, and coordination with primary care.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including assessment notes, progress charts, and discharge summaries in line with HSE/Hiqa standards.
- Contribute to clinical governance, audit, teaching, and service‑improvement initiatives within the medical directorate.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- Full Specialist Registration in General/Internal Medicine on the Specialist Division of the IMC Register.
- Consultant‑level experience in internal/general medicine within HSE, NHS, or equivalent systems.
- Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
- Strong leadership, communication, and teaching skills.
- Commitment to patient‑centred, recovery‑oriented medicine.

Working Conditions
- Consultant‑level rota aligned with HSE Public‑Only Consultant 2023 (POCC23)‑type hours (e.g., 37 hours per week clinical commitment with on‑call).
- Busy internal/general‑medicine wards, AMAU, and medical‑on‑call coverage across multiple subspecialties.
- Multidisciplinary environment with frequent handovers and high‑volume admissions.
