Job Overview

The Locum Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine provides senior‑level leadership for the Intensive Care Unit, managing critically ill medical and surgical patients, supervising non‑consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs), and supporting departmental education, audit, and research. The role sits within large acute or academic‑teaching hospitals and is integral to high‑dependency, multi‑organ support and complex peri‑operative care. This position is suited to experienced intensivists seeking flexible consultant‑level locum work in major Irish ICUs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the assessment, management, and ongoing care of critically ill patients with sepsis, multi‑organ failure, post‑operative complications, trauma, and cardiorespiratory failure.
  • Supervise and be ultimately responsible for diagnosis, treatment, and care delivered by NCHDs (Registrars and SHOs) in the ICU.
  • Participate in and direct on‑call ICU cover (e.g., 1:7 or equivalent rota) and provide cross‑cover as required by the department.
  • Perform and oversee advanced life‑support procedures, including intubation, mechanical ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, and organ‑support therapies.
  • Collaborate closely with anaesthesia, surgery, emergency medicine, oncology, and other medical specialties to coordinate complex care and discharges.
  • Uphold ICU standards for infection control, sedation, weaning, and patient‑safety protocols in line with HSE and national/international guidelines.
  • Contribute to ICU education, mentoring, and training of doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Support ICU research initiatives and quality‑improvement projects within the department.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • Specialist registration in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners in Ireland in a primary specialty (Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Surgery, or Medicine) plus satisfactory training in intensive care medicine as per the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine of Ireland.
  • Consultant‑level experience in adult intensive care, including multi‑organ support and complex peri‑operative critical care.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and teaching skills.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and quality‑driven critical care.

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced clinical judgment and decision‑making in high‑acuity, time‑critical situations.
  • Leadership and team‑management experience in a busy ICU environment.
  • Confidence managing ventilated and haemodynamically unstable patients.
  • Excellent communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Professionalism, resilience, and adaptability in a high‑pressure setting.

Working Conditions

  • Consultant‑level rota aligned with HSE Public‑Only Consultant 2023 (POCC23) principles (e.g., 37 hours per week clinical commitment, including on‑call).
  • Large, busy ICU in a major acute or academic teaching hospital, admitting complex medical, surgical, oncology, and trauma‑related cases.
  • Strong multidisciplinary team including anaesthesia, critical‑care‑trained nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and other allied health professionals.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Highly competitive consultant‑level remuneration, depending on hours and subspecialty mix.
  • Flexible, time‑limited contract with potential for extension or rotation.
  • Opportunities in leading ICU and tertiary‑care centres in Ireland.
