Job Overview

The Locum General Surgery Registrar provides senior-level surgical care under consultant supervision, leading the assessment, management, and follow‑up of patients admitted to the general surgery service. The role includes both emergency and elective general surgery, with responsibilities across wards, theatres, outpatient clinics, and on‑call cover. This position is ideal for experienced surgeons seeking flexible locum work in a busy Irish hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the assessment and management of patients admitted under general surgery, including abdominal emergencies, hernias, cholecystectomies, GI obstruction, and trauma‑related cases.
  • Conduct detailed clerking, formulate management plans, and review investigations (blood tests, imaging, etc.) and escalate appropriately.
  • Assist and participate in, or as appropriate lead, emergency and elective general surgery procedures under consultant supervision.
  • Supervise and support SHOs and junior medical staff in ward and theatre work.
  • Attend and contribute to ward rounds, consultant rounds, and multidisciplinary discussions.
  • Participate in outpatient clinics, surgical lists, and on‑call rota including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, discharge planning, and communication with patients and referrers.
  • Respond to surgical emergencies and escalating complications promptly.
  • Uphold surgical safety, infection control, and clinical governance standards in line with HSE and hospital policy.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration at registrar‑grade or equivalent (NCHD Reg) or eligibility for registration.
  • Previous registrar‑level experience in general surgery or equivalent in an acute hospital setting.
  • Strong knowledge of general surgical conditions and basic peri‑operative care.
  • Ability to work independently in a busy surgical department with rotating shifts.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and organisational skills.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or appropriate visa/permit).
