Job Overview
The Locum Consultant General Surgeon provides senior‑level specialist leadership for the general surgery service, including emergency and elective procedures, outpatient clinics, and multidisciplinary decision‑making. The role involves leading teams, supervising junior staff, and ensuring high‑quality, safe surgical care across wards, theatres, and clinics. This position is suited to experienced consultants seeking flexible locum work in a busy Irish hospital environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant‑level assessment and management of patients admitted under general surgery, including abdominal emergencies, hernias, appendicitis, cholecystitis, trauma‑related surgery, and oncology‑related general surgery.
- Lead and perform (or supervise) elective and emergency general surgical procedures within the agreed scope of practice.
- Supervise and mentor registrars, SHOs, and junior medical staff in ward and theatre settings.
- Attend and lead ward rounds, consultant rounds, and multidisciplinary team meetings (e.g., oncology, trauma, GI services).
- Manage outpatient clinics, including pre‑operative assessment, follow‑up, and complication review.
- Make senior decisions regarding emergency admissions, escalation, transfer, and discharge planning.
- Maintain accurate documentation, operative notes, and discharge summaries in line with HSE and hospital standards.
- Contribute to clinical governance, audit, teaching, training, and service development initiatives.
- Uphold surgical safety, infection control, and risk‑management protocols.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- Full specialist registration in Surgery (General Surgery) on the Specialist Division of the IMC register, or equivalent with eligibility to obtain it.
- Consultant‑level experience in general surgery with a broad range of emergency and elective procedures.
- Demonstrated experience in teaching and supervising junior surgical staff.
- Current ALS/ACLS certification; ATLS or trauma‑related training is highly desirable.
- Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or appropriate work permit/visa).
