Job Overview

The Locum Gastroenterology SHO supports the gastroenterology team in the assessment, investigation, and management of patients with acute and chronic gastrointestinal and hepatology conditions. The role involves working closely with consultants, registrars, nursing staff, and allied health professionals to deliver safe, efficient, patient-centered care. This position is well suited to doctors seeking flexible locum work while gaining experience in a busy gastroenterology service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess patients presenting to gastroenterology wards, clinics, endoscopy units, and emergency admissions.
  • Assist with clerking, initial assessment, and ongoing review of gastroenterology patients.
  • Order, review, and follow up investigations such as blood tests, stool tests, abdominal imaging, and endoscopy-related results.
  • Support the care of patients with abdominal pain, GI bleeding, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, dyspepsia, and other digestive disorders.
  • Participate in ward rounds, consultant rounds, and multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Complete accurate documentation, discharge summaries, and clinical notes.
  • Assist with patient flow, referrals, and follow-up of outstanding results.
  • Escalate unwell patients appropriately and promptly.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants, registrars, nurses, and other specialties.
  • Maintain clinical governance, infection control, and patient safety standards.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognized by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration or eligibility for registration.
  • Previous experience working at SHO level in medicine, gastroenterology, or a related acute hospital setting.
  • Good understanding of general medicine and common GI conditions.
  • Strong clinical assessment, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a busy hospital environment.
  • Right to work in Ireland, where required by the employing hospital or agency.
