Job Overview

The Locum Gastroenterology Registrar is responsible for the assessment, investigation, and management of patients with a wide range of gastrointestinal and hepatology conditions. The role involves working closely with consultants, SHOs, nursing staff, and allied health professionals to deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred care in inpatient, outpatient, and endoscopy‑related settings. This position is suited to experienced doctors with a background in medicine and gastroenterology who are seeking flexible locum work in a busy hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organise and oversee the investigation and management of inpatients admitted under the gastroenterology team.
  • Conduct detailed histories, physical examinations, and formulate management plans for acute and chronic GI conditions.
  • Review and interpret endoscopy, imaging, and laboratory results, and follow up outstanding investigations.
  • Manage patients with abdominal pain, GI bleeding, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, dyspepsia, and other digestive disorders.
  • Follow up and coordinate patient care across wards, outpatient clinics, and procedural areas.
  • Answer and triage referrals from GPs, emergency department, and other medical‑surgical teams.
  • Attend gastroenterology outpatient clinics and support consultant‑led follow‑up lists.
  • Support endoscopy services, including pre‑ and post‑procedure assessment and documentation.
  • Supervise and support SHOs and junior medical staff in daily clinical duties.
  • Escalate unwell patients promptly and participate in multidisciplinary review and handover.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, discharge summaries, and compliance with clinical governance and patient‑safety standards.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration (or eligibility to register) in the relevant grade for registrar work.
  • Previous registrar‑level experience in medicine or gastroenterology/endoscopy.
  • Solid knowledge of acute and chronic gastrointestinal and hepatology conditions.
  • Ability to manage undifferentiated medical presentations independently under supervision.
  • Strong clinical, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work shifts that may include days, evenings, nights, and on‑call duties.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU citizenship or appropriate visa/permit).
