Job Overview
The Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist provides expert specialist care for patients with a wide range of gastrointestinal and hepatology conditions. The role involves leading outpatient clinics, inpatient services, and endoscopy‑related activities while overseeing junior doctors and contributing to service leadership, quality improvement, and governance. This position is suited to experienced consultants looking for flexible locum work in a busy Irish hospital setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant‑level assessment and management of patients with GI and liver disease, including acute and chronic presentations.
- Lead inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology services, including IBD, hepatology, GI bleeding, oncology‑related GI disease, and functional bowel disorders.
- Supervise and support registrars, SHOs, and other junior staff in clinical decision‑making and procedural work.
- Participate in and/or lead endoscopy services, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and supervise trainee‑led endoscopy.
- Manage emergency GI referrals from the Emergency Department and other medical‑surgical teams.
- Present at and contribute to multidisciplinary meetings (e.g., cancer MDTs, liver MDTs, IBD boards).
- Ensure accurate documentation, discharge planning, and communication with patients and referrers.
- Participate in clinical audits, service development, and teaching and training of medical staff.
- Uphold clinical governance, infection control, and patient‑safety standards in line with HSE and hospital policy.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- Full specialist registration on the Specialist Division of the Medical Council register in Gastroenterology (or equivalent with eligibility to obtain it within the agreed timeframe).
- Consultant‑level experience in gastroenterology and general internal medicine.
- Proven experience in outpatient clinics, inpatient gastroenterology, and endoscopy services.
- Ability to manage complex GI and hepatology cases independently.
- Active ALS/ACLS certification; additional advanced life support or endoscopy‑specific training is an advantage.
- Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or valid work permit/Stamp 4 GNIB‑style visa).

Remuneration and Benefits
