Job Overview
The Locum Emergency Medicine SHO supports the emergency department team in the assessment, treatment, and ongoing management of patients presenting with urgent and emergency conditions. The role is suited to doctors who are confident working in a fast-paced clinical environment and who can provide safe, efficient, patient-centered care under supervision. This position offers flexible locum work and exposure to a wide variety of acute presentations.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and clerking patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
- Carry out initial examination, investigation, and management of acute cases.
- Order and interpret basic investigations such as blood tests, ECGs, and imaging.
- Stabilize unwell patients and escalate appropriately to seniors.
- Assist in the management of trauma, medical, surgical, and minor injury presentations.
- Perform procedural duties within scope, as directed and supervised.
- Participate in handovers, ward-style reviews, and multidisciplinary communication.
- Complete accurate documentation, discharge letters, and admission notes.
- Support patient flow, prioritization, and department efficiency.
- Work collaboratively with nurses, registrars, consultants, and allied health professionals.
Requirements
- Medical degree recognized by the Irish Medical Council.
- IMC registration or eligibility to register.
- Previous experience in Emergency Medicine, acute medicine, or a similar hospital setting.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a busy ED.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and documentation skills.
- Right to work in Ireland, such as Irish/UK/EU citizenship or Stamp 4 where required.
