Job Overview

The Locum Emergency Medicine Registrar is responsible for delivering senior clinical care in a busy Emergency Department, managing acute presentations, supervising junior doctors, and supporting safe patient flow. The role requires strong decision-making, leadership, and the ability to manage high-pressure situations while maintaining high standards of care. This position is ideal for experienced doctors seeking flexible locum opportunities in emergency medicine.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage patients presenting with acute medical, surgical, and trauma conditions.
  • Lead the initial management of critically ill and unstable patients.
  • Supervise and support SHOs and junior medical staff in the Emergency Department.
  • Review and escalate patients appropriately to consultants or specialty teams.
  • Interpret investigations including ECGs, blood tests, imaging, and point-of-care results.
  • Perform and oversee emergency procedures within scope of practice.
  • Participate in resuscitations, trauma calls, and major incident responses.
  • Ensure timely documentation, discharge summaries, and admission plans.
  • Support patient flow, handovers, and coordination with nursing and allied health teams.
  • Work collaboratively with inpatient teams, ICU, radiology, and specialty services.
  • Maintain clinical governance, patient safety, and infection control standards.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognized by the Irish Medical Council.
  • Full IMC registration or eligibility for registration.
  • Previous registrar-level experience in Emergency Medicine or acute hospital medicine.
  • Strong knowledge of acute care, resuscitation, and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and lead under pressure.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.
  • Right to work in Ireland, where required by the employer or agency.
