Job Overview

The Locum Emergency Medicine Consultant is responsible for providing senior specialist leadership in the Emergency Department. The role involves delivering expert assessment and management of acutely unwell patients, overseeing clinical decision-making, supporting patient flow, and ensuring safe, high-quality emergency care. This position is suited to experienced consultants who can work effectively in a fast-paced and often high-pressure environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead consultant-level assessment and management of emergency patients.
  • Provide expert input for complex, undifferentiated, and critically ill cases.
  • Supervise and support registrars, SHOs, nurses, and multidisciplinary staff.
  • Oversee resuscitations, trauma calls, major incidents, and high-acuity presentations.
  • Support triage, streaming, and patient flow within the Emergency Department.
  • Make senior decisions regarding admission, discharge, transfer, and escalation.
  • Liaise with specialty teams, ICU, radiology, and inpatient wards as required.
  • Review and manage complaints, clinical incidents, and governance issues where appropriate.
  • Participate in teaching, training, audits, and service development.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and uphold clinical governance, safety, and quality standards.

Essential Requirements

  • Medical degree recognized by the Irish Medical Council.
  • Specialist registration in Emergency Medicine, or eligibility for consultant registration.
  • Significant post-specialist experience in emergency medicine.
  • Proven ability to manage complex and high-acuity emergency cases independently.
  • Experience in resuscitation, trauma, acute medicine, and leadership in ED.
  • Current ALS/ACLS certification; ATLS or equivalent is highly desirable.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland.

  • May involve work across multiple hospital locations or departments.
