Grade III Inspector

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is recruiting a number of Grade III Inspectors to join teams across its Occupational Safety and Occupational Health Divisions.

The role offers the opportunity to work across a broad range of sectors and contribute directly to improving workplace safety, health and regulatory compliance throughout Ireland.

Grade III Inspector roles may be based at the Health and Safety Authority’s Dublin headquarters or at one of its regional offices in Athlone, Sligo, Galway, Kilkenny, Waterford, Cork or Limerick, as agreed between the HSA and the successful candidate. Some positions may have a national or international remit and may therefore involve travel as part of the role.

The Role

Depending on the team or specialist area, responsibilities may include:

  • Carrying out workplace inspections and investigations.
  • Preparing criminal investigation files for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
  • Undertaking market surveillance of industrial products and chemicals.
  • Assessing potential chemical exposure risks to workers, consumers and the environment.
  • Preparing technical, scientific and regulatory reports.
  • Contributing to legislation, policy and guidance.
  • Providing technical and scientific support to national and EU committees.
  • Researching technical queries and supporting the Authority’s Chemicals Helpdesk and Contact Centre.
  • Representing Ireland and the HSA at national, EU and international meetings.
  • Participating in inspector exchange programmes with other EU regulatory bodies.
  • Supporting National Advisory Committees, awareness activities and stakeholder engagement.
  • Undertaking other relevant duties as required.

Essential Requirements

Candidates must have:

  • An Honours Degree at NFQ Level 8 or equivalent in Engineering, including Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Structural or Mining Engineering; Science; Construction Management; Agricultural Science; Occupational Health and Safety; or another appropriate discipline.
  • At least two years’ relevant work experience.
  • A full Category B driving licence.
  • The ability to demonstrate the required competencies for the role.

Desirable Experience & Qualifications

It would be advantageous to have:

  • A recognised Diploma or higher qualification in Occupational Safety and Health.
  • A relevant postgraduate technical or scientific qualification, such as DGSA, process safety or occupational hygiene.
  • Experience in regulatory or technical assessment, inspection, investigation, report writing, policy development, enforcement or prosecution.
  • Experience in agriculture/farming, social care and/or ergonomics.
  • Familiarity with relevant EU legislation.

Appointment Process

Successful candidates will be placed on a panel, with appointments offered as vacancies arise based on order of merit following the interview process.

The panel will remain valid for 12 months from the date of establishment.
