What Does a Social Worker Do?
Social Workers support individuals, families and communities experiencing a wide range of social, emotional, health and safeguarding needs. Depending on the setting, you could work in hospitals, wards, community services, residential settings, mental health services, child and family services or specialist healthcare environments. Social Workers work closely with multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with doctors, nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, other healthcare professionals and community services to coordinate appropriate support and care.
Social Workers may support children and families, adults experiencing mental health difficulties, people with disabilities, older people, patients experiencing illness or people facing complex social circumstances. Roles are available with the HSE and private healthcare and social care providers.
Key Social Worker duties can include:
- Assessing individual and family needs and identifying appropriate support.
- Developing, implementing and reviewing care and support plans.
- Advocating for service users and promoting their rights and wellbeing.
- Working with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies.
- Supporting safeguarding, child protection and risk management processes.
- Maintaining accurate case records and professional documentation.
- Connecting individuals and families with appropriate community and specialist services.
How to Become a Social Worker
To become a Social Worker in Ireland, you need an appropriate recognised Social Work qualification and registration with CORU. CORU maintains a list of approved Social Work qualifications, including undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at recognised Irish institutions.
For new entrants, CORU's standard registration route requires an approved qualification, an online application, evidence that you are fit and proper to practise and, where applicable, sufficient knowledge of the language required to practise in Ireland. If you qualified outside Ireland, your qualification must first be recognised by CORU before you can apply for registration.
There are several education routes into Social Work, including undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Your previous education and experience will determine which route is appropriate, so check the entry requirements of individual courses and the current CORU requirements before applying.

Pay and Benefits for Social Worker Jobs
There is no single national average salary for every Social Worker role in Ireland because pay varies according to employer, grade, experience, location and specialism. For public-sector roles, the HSE publishes national salary scales. As of February 2026, the HSE Social Worker scale was €50,621 to €73,080, before the LSI point, while Senior Social Worker and leadership grades attract higher salaries. The HSE also lists specialist grades such as Social Worker – Medical and Psychiatric Social Worker on the Social Worker scale.

Career Progression for Social Worker
