Job Overview

The Locum Internal Medicine Registrar provides senior‑level general‑medicine care across medical wards, acute assessment units, and medical on‑call services. The role involves leading the assessment and management of a broad range of medical conditions, supervising SHOs and junior doctors, and supporting multidisciplinary teams. This position is ideal for experienced medicine registrars seeking flexible locum work in busy Irish hospitals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the assessment and management of patients admitted under general/internal medicine, including respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine, and infectious‑disease presentations.
  • Conduct detailed clerking, formulate management plans, and review investigations (bloods, ECG, imaging, etc.), escalating abnormal findings to consultants.
  • Participate in ward rounds, consultant visits, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Supervise and support SHOs and junior medical staff on wards and during on‑call duties.
  • Respond to medical emergencies, rapid‑response calls, and resuscitation efforts as directed.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including admission notes, progress charts, and discharge summaries.
  • Escalate deteriorating or complex patients promptly and coordinate with specialty teams.
  • Uphold infection control, patient‑safety, and clinical‑governance standards in line with HSE and HIQA guidelines.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • Full IMC registration at registrar level (e.g., General Medicine NCHD) and eligible to work in Ireland (Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in internal/general medicine in an acute hospital setting.
  • Strong understanding of common medical conditions and acute‑care principles.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and organisational skills.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and high‑quality, patient‑centred care.

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced clinical judgment and prioritisation skills.
  • Comfort managing undifferentiated, acutely unwell patients.
  • Leadership and supervisory ability with junior staff.
  • Professional, adaptable, and resilient approach in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills.

Working Conditions

  • Shift‑based rota including day, evening, night, weekend, and on‑call duties.
  • Busy internal‑medicine and general‑medical wards with exposure to Emergency Department referrals and multiple subspecialties.
  • Fast‑paced, high‑volume environment with frequent handovers and urgent presentations.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Competitive locum hourly rates, typically in the €56–€71 per hour band depending on experience, site, and shift type (nights, weekends, bank holidays).
  • Flexible working arrangements and opportunities for contract extension or rotation.

Experience

  • 3 - 5 years of experience

Salary range

  • €54 - €65 per hour
