Job Overview

The Locum Radiology Registrar provides intermediate‑level radiological support within the diagnostic and interventional imaging service, contributing to reporting, image‑guided procedures, and multidisciplinary case management. The role sits between SHOs and consultants and is crucial for service coverage in busy radiology departments. This position is ideal for doctors with radiology or related‑specialty training seeking flexible locum work in a technology‑driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the interpretation and reporting of imaging studies (X‑ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and PET/CT, as appropriate) under consultant supervision.
  • Liaise with radiographers and clinical teams to ensure appropriate imaging and timely handling of requests, including urgent and critical findings.
  • Support the radiology team in cross‑sectional imaging and basic interventional or fluoroscopy‑guided procedures where required.
  • Participate in on‑call and after‑hours radiology cover, including emergency reporting and urgent on‑site support.
  • Present and discuss cases at radiology and clinical MDT meetings.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, preliminary reports, and follow‑up records in line with departmental and HSE/Hiqa standards.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and audit activities within the Radiology Directorate.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration at registrar‑level (radiology or closely related specialty, or with active radiology‑rotas or equivalent).
  • Previous experience in radiology, general medicine, surgery, or another hospital‑based specialty with imaging exposure.
  • Familiarity with common imaging modalities and reporting workflows.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4 GNIB).

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong analytical and observational skills for interpreting imaging.
  • Ability to work under time‑pressure and manage multiple reports.
  • Excellent communication with radiologists, radiographers, and referring clinicians.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and reporting.
  • Commitment to radiation‑safety, infection‑control, and continuous learning.

Working Conditions

  • Shift‑based or structured rota including day, evening, and on‑call sessions, depending on the hospital.
  • Busy diagnostic imaging department with exposure to CT, MRI, ultrasound, plain film, interventional radiology, and other subspecialties.
  • May involve working across multiple hospital sites or imaging centres.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Competitive locum hourly rates (broadly in line with registrar‑level SHO/SpR pay scales).
  • Flexible working arrangements and short‑ to medium‑term contracts.
  • Opportunity to gain experience in a high‑volume radiology service.

Experience

  • 3 - 5 years of experience

Salary range

  • €54 - €65 per hour
