Job Overview

The Locum Orthopaedic Surgery Registrar provides senior‑level orthopaedic care across emergency and elective services, including fracture clinics, ward‑based trauma/orthopaedic care, theatres, and outpatient reviews. The role involves leading the management of patients with fractures, joint injuries, degenerative disease, and orthopaedic trauma, supervising junior doctors, and supporting consultants in a busy hospital environment. This position is ideal for experienced orthopaedic registrars seeking flexible locum work in Ireland.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the assessment and management of patients admitted under trauma and orthopaedic surgery, including fractures, dislocations, soft‑tissue injuries, arthritis, and orthopaedic trauma.
  • Conduct detailed clerking, formulate management plans, and review investigations (X‑rays, CT, MRI, blood tests), escalating as required.
  • Assist and participate in, or where appropriate lead, elective and emergency orthopaedic procedures under consultant supervision.
  • Support fracture‑clinic and ward‑based follow‑up and clinic‑style reviews.
  • Supervise and support SHOs and junior medical staff in ward and theatre work.
  • Participate in ward rounds, consultant rounds, and multidisciplinary discussions relevant to orthopaedics.
  • Cover on‑call rota, including emergency admissions and urgent orthopaedic referrals.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including admission notes, progress charts, and discharge summaries.
  • Uphold infection control, patient‑safety, and clinical‑governance standards in the orthopaedic unit.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration at registrar/NCHD‑level or equivalent, with prior orthopaedic experience.
  • Previous registrar‑level experience in trauma and orthopaedic surgery or a closely related surgical specialty.
  • Strong understanding of common orthopaedic and trauma presentations.
  • Eligibility to locum in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4/1G).
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and organisational skills.
  • Commitment to patient safety and continuous professional development.

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced clinical judgment and prioritisation skills.
  • Confidence in managing undifferentiated musculoskeletal and trauma patients.
  • Leadership and supervisory ability with junior staff.
  • Professional, adaptable, and resilient approach in a high‑pressure environment.
  • Strong organisational and interpersonal skills.

Working Conditions

  • Shift‑based rota including day, evening, night, weekend, and on‑call duties.
  • Busy trauma and orthopaedic service with exposure to emergency admissions, wards, theatres, and outpatient‑style clinics.
  • May involve short‑notice or urgent cover depending on service needs.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Competitive locum hourly rates (typically in the €49–€71 range), depending on experience and hospital.
  • Flexible working arrangements and variable‑length contracts.
  • Opportunity to gain experience in leading orthopaedic and trauma centres in Ireland.

Experience

  • 3 - 5 years of experience

Salary range

  • €54 - €65 per hour
