Job Overview

The Locum Urology SHO supports the urological team in the assessment, investigation, and management of patients with acute and chronic urological conditions. The role involves working closely with consultants, registrars, nurses, and allied health professionals across wards, clinics, theatres, and emergency services. This position is ideal for doctors seeking flexible locum work while gaining experience in urology and general surgery in an Irish hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the assessment and clerking of patients presenting with haematuria, urinary tract infection, benign prostatic hyperplasia, renal stones, uro‑oncology, genitourinary trauma, and voiding‑dysfunction‑related problems.
  • Support the management of inpatients before and after urological procedures, including cystoscopies, prostatectomies, nephrectomies, and ureteral‑stone‑related surgery.
  • Participate in ward rounds, outpatient‑style reviews, and urology‑clinic support.
  • Assist consultants and registrars in theatre with elective and emergency urological procedures under supervision.
  • Order and review basic investigations (urinalysis, bloods, ultrasound, CT‑URO, etc.) and escalate abnormalities promptly.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including admission notes, progress charts, and discharge summaries.
  • Respond to urological emergencies (e.g., acute urinary retention, obstruction, pyelonephritis) and escalate as required.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including ED, radiology, oncology, and renal services.
  • Uphold infection‑control, patient‑safety, and clinical‑governance standards.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • IMC registration or eligibility for registration at SHO/NCHD level.
  • Previous experience in urology, general surgery, or acute hospital medicine is advantageous.
  • Basic understanding of common urological conditions and peri‑operative care.
  • Strong clinical assessment, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Eligibility to locum in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4 GNIB).
  • Comfortable working in a busy surgical/urology environment.

Skills and Competencies

  • Good clinical judgment and prioritisation skills.
  • Comfort with ward‑based urology work and theatre support.
  • Ability to manage multiple patients and respond to emergencies.
  • Professional, adaptable, and reliable approach to locum work.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and high‑quality care.

Working Conditions

  • Shift‑based or fixed‑day rota, which may include days, evenings, weekends, and on‑call duties depending on the hospital.
  • Busy urology service with exposure to wards, outpatient clinics, theatres, and ED‑related urology referrals.
  • Structured 6–12‑month‑type posts are common in Ireland for urology SHO roles.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Lucrative locum or salary‑based remuneration (often in the €50,000–€70,000 per‑year band for fixed‑term SHO‑level roles) depending on the post and location.
  • Flexible working arrangements and opportunities for contract extension.
  • Opportunity to gain experience in uro‑oncology, stones, reconstruction, and general urology.

Experience

  • 2 - 3 years of experience

Salary range

  • €49 - €57 per hour
