Job Overview

The Locum Pathology Registrar is a senior‑trainee doctor providing non‑consultant, specialist‑level support within a pathology department. The role involves active participation in the examination, interpretation, and reporting of histological, cytological, haematological, or microbiological specimens under consultant supervision. This position is ideal for IMC‑registered registrars seeking flexible locum work while furthering their pathology training across multiple sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in grossing, dissection, and documentation of surgical specimens, preparing material for histological processing.
  • Review and interpret histopathology slides, cytology specimens, and/or haematology preparations, contributing to preliminary reports under consultant oversight.
  • Support the microbiology or haematology laboratory‑based registrar duties such as culture review, sensitivity reporting, and basic antimicrobial‑stewardship input.
  • Present pathology findings to clinical teams and attend multidisciplinary meetings relating to cancer, infection, or haematological disorders as required.
  • Maintain accurate records in laboratory information systems and EMR, ensuring traceability and compliance.
  • Participate in quality‑improvement, audit, and safety activities within the pathology service.
  • Support the training and orientation of SHOs and junior medical staff in pathology and laboratory practice.
  • Uphold strict health‑and‑safety, bio‑security, and infection‑control standards.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • Full IMC registration at registrar/NCHD level.
  • Postgraduate training or registrar‑level experience in pathology (histopathology, haematology, microbiology, or related subspecialty).
  • Demonstrated experience in a busy hospital pathology or laboratory setting.
  • Strong skills in microscopy, specimen‑handling, and diagnostic decision‑making.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced clinical‑pathology judgment and attention to detail.
  • Comfort with laboratory‑based workflows and high‑throughput diagnostic environments.
  • Ability to manage complex workloads, tight deadlines, and multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication with clinicians, scientists, and laboratory staff.
  • Professionalism, reliability, and adaptability in a locum‑based role.

Working Conditions

  • Structured laboratory‑centred rota, often including day and evening sessions, with possible on‑call or weekend duties depending on the department.
  • Busy pathology environment (histology, cytology, haematology, and/or microbiology) with exposure to a wide range of diagnostic cases.
  • Strong multidisciplinary links with surgery, oncology, infectious‑diseases, and internal‑medicine teams.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Registrar‑level salary or hourly locum rates, depending on the hospital and experience.
  • Flexible assignments and potential for rotation across pathology services or hospitals.

Salary range

  • €54 - €65 per hour
