Job Overview

The Locum Minor Injury Registrar leads the clinical service in a Local Injury or Minor Injury Unit, managing patients with non‑life‑threatening acute injuries and minor medical problems. The role involves rapid assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of musculoskeletal, soft‑tissue, and simple acute presentations, under consultant supervision. This position is ideal for experienced registrars in emergency medicine, orthopaedics, or general practice‑type acute care seeking flexible locum work in a high‑throughput urgent‑care setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the assessment and management of patients with sprains, strains, suspected fractures/dislocations, minor burns, lacerations, wounds, foreign‑body injuries, minor head injuries, and simple acute medical conditions.
  • Order and interpret basic investigations (X‑ray, bloods, wound swabs) and ensure safe discharge or onward referral.
  • Supervise and support SHOs, junior doctors, and other medical staff in the Local/Minor Injury Unit.
  • Initiate and monitor treatment, including fracture immobilisation, wound care, suturing, and splinting, within agreed protocols.
  • Participate in on‑shift urgent‑care/“walk‑in” duties, including evening, weekend, and bank‑holiday coverage where required.
  • Escalate complex, high‑acuity, or potentially serious cases promptly to senior emergency/acute‑care consultants.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed documentation and discharge summaries in line with HSE and hospital standards.
  • Work closely with nursing, radiography, and allied health teams to coordinate care and follow‑up.
  • Uphold strict infection‑control, aseptic, and patient‑safety protocols in the minor injury environment.

Requirements

  • Medical degree recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
  • Full IMC registration at registrar/NCHD level, with experience in emergency medicine, orthopaedics, general practice, or a related acute‑care specialty.
  • Demonstrated experience in minor‑injury, emergency, or urgent‑care settings (e.g., LMU, ED, GP‑out‑of‑hours).
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland (e.g., Irish/UK/EU passport or Stamp 4).
  • Strong clinical judgment, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and high‑quality urgent‑care.

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced clinical assessment skills and ability to differentiate minor‑injury from emergency presentations.
  • Confidence managing musculoskeletal and soft‑tissue injuries, including fracture immobilisation and wound closure.
  • Leadership and supervisory ability with junior staff.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Working Conditions

  • Shift‑based rota, commonly including long‑day, evening, weekend, and bank‑holiday sessions aligned with urgent care patterns.
  • Local/Minor Injury Unit or Urgent Care Centre with a mix of trauma, sprains, fractures, lacerations, burns, and minor medical presentations.
  • High‑throughput, protocol‑driven environment with regular handovers and emphasis on rapid assessment and discharge.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Competitive locum hourly rates, typically in the €56–€71 per hour band depending on experience, shift‑type, and hospital/agency.
  • Flexible working arrangements and opportunities for contract extension or rotation across multiple sites.

Experience

  • 3 - 5 years of experience

Salary range

  • €54 - €65 per hour
