Job Overview

The Locum Ophthalmology SHO supports the ophthalmology team in the assessment, investigation, and management of patients with acute and chronic eye conditions. The role involves working closely with consultants, registrars, nurses, orthoptists, and allied health professionals to deliver safe, efficient, patient-centered ophthalmic care. This position is well suited to doctors seeking flexible locum work while gaining experience in a busy ophthalmology service.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess patients attending ophthalmology clinics, emergency eye services, wards, and theatre lists.
• Assist in the clerking and follow-up of patients with common eye conditions.
• Support the management of patients with red eye, eye trauma, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, retinal problems, and other ophthalmic presentations.
• Order, review, and follow up investigations, escalating abnormal findings appropriately.
• Assist consultants and registrars with procedures and theatre preparation where required.
• Maintain accurate documentation, including clinical notes, discharge summaries, and clinic letters.
• Support patient flow, referrals, and follow-up of outstanding results.
• Escalate urgent or sight-threatening conditions promptly.
• Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary ophthalmology team.
• Uphold infection control, patient safety, and clinical governance standards.

Requirements

• Medical degree recognized by the Irish Medical Council.
• IMC registration or eligibility for registration.
• Previous experience in ophthalmology, surgery, or acute hospital medicine is advantageous.
• Good understanding of basic ophthalmic conditions and emergency eye presentations.
• Strong clinical assessment, documentation, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a busy hospital environment.
• Right to work in Ireland, where required by the employer or agency.
