Job Description
We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist in Old Age Psychiatry to work for a great community based service in Sligo Leitrim Mental Health Services.
Purpose of the Role:
This is a senior clinical post designed to improve the quality of care for older adults experiencing mental health issues, by delivering an integrated, consultant-led service across community, acute hospital, and residential care settings. The post supports national health and dementia strategies and contributes to reducing hospital admissions, enhancing care planning, and promoting multidisciplinary team (MDT) collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties:
Provide comprehensive assessment and treatment of mental health issues in older adults (65+) with functional psychiatric disorders and dementia-related behavioural challenges.
Deliver consultant-led psychiatric liaison services to nursing homes and acute hospitals.
Lead and collaborate with the Psychiatry of Old Age multidisciplinary team.
Engage in clinical governance, service planning, and audit activities to ensure high standards of care.
Participate in on-call rota with adult psychiatry consultants in the region.
Contribute to and lead clinical pathways aligned with national dementia and older persons models of care.
Service Development:
Support integration with Geriatrics, Neurology, Radiology, and other specialties.
Enhance outreach services and home-based assessments.
Develop service user-centered care plans and promote autonomy and carer involvement.
Teaching and Training:
Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Opportunity to engage in university teaching, academic roles, and OSCE examining.
Essential Requirements:
Registration: Specialist registration in Psychiatry of Old Age with the Medical Council of Ireland.
Transport: Access to transport for community-based service delivery.
Experience & Skills:
Leadership in clinical service delivery.
Expertise in older adult psychiatry, risk management, and complex case coordination.
Proven track record in multidisciplinary team working and integrated care.
Strong communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Attributes:
Interest or experience in dementia care, teaching, quality improvement, and research.
Experience working within rural healthcare settings.
Willingness to lead in national pilot initiatives or demonstration sites for integrated older adult mental health care.
