Job Description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Chief Medical Scientist – Microbiology to lead and manage a well-established diagnostic microbiology laboratory. This senior position is ideal for an experienced and driven professional looking to shape the future of laboratory services and contribute directly to patient care through scientific leadership and innovation. We will also consider potential Senior Medical Scientists
About the Role
In this pivotal role, you'll take the helm of the microbiology laboratory team, coordinating closely with Consultant Microbiologists, laboratory leadership, and multidisciplinary staff. You will ensure the highest standards in diagnostic testing and play a key role in developing laboratory strategy, services, and quality assurance practices.
Key Responsibilities
Provide scientific and operational leadership in the diagnostic microbiology laboratory.
Oversee daily laboratory functions, ensuring efficient delivery of accurate and timely results.
Lead and support a high-performing team, ensuring appropriate staffing and skill development.
Uphold and enhance quality and safety standards, including ISO 15189 accreditation requirements.
Collaborate on the development and implementation of innovative laboratory techniques and services.
Promote a culture of learning, mentorship, and professional development among staff.
Participate in strategic planning, budgeting, and cost-efficiency initiatives.
Act as a key point of contact for internal stakeholders and external service users.
What We’re Looking For
BSc (minimum Level 8, QQI or equivalent) in a relevant clinical science or laboratory medicine field.
Registration (or eligibility) with CORU as a Medical Scientist.
Eligibility for membership of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).
Minimum 5 years’ experience in a clinical diagnostic lab, including 2 years in a senior role.
Strong experience in clinical microbiology.
Proven leadership ability with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
