Job Description
We are recruiting for the following:
Job Title: Registrar - Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery
Location: University Hospital, Ireland
Reporting To: Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery / Clinical Director
Contract Type: Full-Time / Specified Purpose Contract / HSE NCHD Contract
Hours: 39 hours per week (as per HSE requirements, including participation in on-call rota)
Salary: As per HSE salary scales for Registrars
Job Summary:
The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team providing acute and elective trauma & orthopaedic surgical care. The Registrar will assist in the management and care of patients within the Trauma & Orthopaedics department, including operative and non-operative cases, and will actively participate in the teaching, research, and audit functions of the department.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide high-quality clinical care under the supervision of consultant orthopaedic surgeons.
Attend ward rounds, outpatient clinics, theatre lists, and emergency assessments.
Assess and manage acute trauma patients and orthopaedic referrals in the Emergency Department.
Participate in the on-call rota, including night and weekend shifts.
Undertake procedures relevant to trauma and orthopaedic surgery within the level of competence.
Maintain detailed and timely medical records, discharge summaries, and clinical documentation.
Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings and care planning.
Engage in teaching of medical students, interns, and junior doctors.
Participate in clinical audits, morbidity & mortality meetings, and research activities.
Comply with all hospital policies including health & safety, infection control, and data protection.
Eligibility Criteria:
Essential:
Medical degree and full registration with the Irish Medical Council (IMC).
Minimum of 2 years post-internship experience, including experience in trauma and orthopaedic surgery.
Eligibility to work in Ireland.
Competence in clinical decision-making and surgical techniques appropriate to registrar level.
Ability to participate in on-call duties.
Desirable:
Completion of Basic Surgical Training (BST) or equivalent.
MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons) or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
Evidence of research activity, audit participation, or published work.
Experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Team player with ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to work under pressure and make timely decisions.
Commitment to continuous professional development and lifelong learning.
High standard of professionalism and patient-centred care.
