Job Description

Job Specification: Consultant Cardiologist
Location: University Hospital, South Of Ireland
Department: Cardiology
Reports to: Clinical Director / Chief Executive Officer
Contract Type: Full-Time


1. Job Purpose
The successful candidate will provide comprehensive cardiology services, including the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with cardiovascular disease. The Consultant Cardiologist will play a key role in advancing cardiac care in the region and contributing to medical education and research in partnership with the affiliated university.

2. Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
Provide consultant-led care to inpatients, outpatients, and emergency referrals with cardiac conditions.

Perform and interpret cardiac investigations (e.g., echocardiography, stress testing, Holter monitoring).

Deliver or support subspecialty services, which may include:

Heart failure

Cardiac imaging

Interventional cardiology

Electrophysiology

Participate in the general internal medicine on-call rota as required.

Lead multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings related to cardiac care.

Provide expert consultation to other departments within the hospital.

Leadership and Service Development
Contribute to the strategic development and quality improvement of the cardiology service.

Participate in clinical governance, audit, and guideline development.

Engage with hospital management to optimize patient flow, safety, and service integration.

Teaching and Academic Responsibilities
Actively contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including bedside teaching, tutorials, and lectures.

Provide supervision and mentorship to NCHDs and medical students from affiliated institutions.

Participate in academic and clinical research activities in collaboration with the university.

Audit and Quality Improvement
Participate in continuous audit and data collection for quality improvement.

Lead or support service evaluations, morbidity and mortality reviews, and peer-review processes.

Maintain registration with a recognised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme.

3. Eligibility Criteria
Essential Requirements
Specialist Registration with the Irish Medical Council (IMC) in the Specialist Division - Cardiology.

Postgraduate qualifications, such as:

MRCP (UK or Ireland), FRCP, or equivalent

Completion of a recognised Cardiology specialist training programme

Minimum of seven years' postgraduate experience, including structured cardiology training.

Desirable
Fellowship in a cardiology subspecialty (e.g., heart failure, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology).

Experience in echocardiography, cardiac MRI, or other advanced diagnostics.

Proven track record in teaching or research.

Publications in peer-reviewed cardiology journals.
