Job Description
Job Specification: Consultant Physician
Location: University Hospital South of Ireland
Department: Medicine
Reports to: Clinical Director / Hospital CEO
Contract Type: Full-time, Temporary (Public Consultant Contract 2023)
Salary Scale: (as per HSE Consultant Pay Scales)
Job Purpose
The Consultant Physician will provide high-quality specialist medical care in line with best practice, supporting both acute and chronic medical services within the hospital. The role includes direct clinical care, supervision of junior doctors, participation in multidisciplinary teams, teaching, audit, research, and service development.
Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Care
Deliver consultant-led inpatient and outpatient medical services, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
Provide specialist advice and management for complex medical cases.
Participate in the general medicine on-call rota.
Lead and support multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
Provide consultation to other specialties when required.
Leadership and Management
Contribute to the development and delivery of clinical governance strategies.
Engage in service planning and quality improvement initiatives.
Supervise and support junior doctors and allied health professionals.
Work collaboratively with hospital management to ensure service efficiency.
Teaching and Training
Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Contribute to the academic environment, including teaching for medical students from affiliated universities.
Provide mentorship and clinical supervision to NCHDs (Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors).
Audit and Research
Participate in clinical audit, risk management, and service evaluation.
Engage in or support ongoing clinical research relevant to the specialty.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement and evidence-based practice.
Eligibility Criteria
-Essential Qualifications
-Registration: Specialist registration with the Irish Medical Council (IMC) in the Division of Medicine.
Qualifications: Hold a relevant postgraduate qualification such as:
MRCP (UK or Ireland), FRCP, or equivalent.
Experience: Minimum of 7 years post-graduate experience, including structured specialty training.
Desirable
-Experience in subspecialty interest (e.g., respiratory, geriatric medicine, endocrinology).
-Involvement in teaching, audit, or research.
-Fellowship or significant academic achievement.
