Job Description

Job Summary

The Chief Medical Office provides occupational health services for civil servants, prison officers, state industrial and defence employees. These services encompass approximately 50,000 employees across 56 government departments/offices and 14 prisons.

This is a newly created role. It is primarily clinical in nature, encompassing the Specialist Occupational Physician role with management responsibilities included. The post is full time and based onsite in a purpose built clinic in Smithfield, Dublin.

Main Duties of the job

This person will support the Civil & Public Service Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in the discharging of the functions of the Office. The successful candidate will deputise for the Civil & Public Service CMO in the event of their scheduled or unscheduled absence. This will require developing a familiarity with the management systems and operation of the CMO’s Office. The person may act as Clinical Lead for designated Occupational Health programme(s).

The Deputy CMO reports to the Civil & Public Service Chief Medical Officer. They are responsible for day to day case management within their designated departments / offices as well as supporting and managing occupational health staff who report to them.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake ongoing training as required and to maintain their registration/ Professional competence as per current Medical Council requirements.

Essential Requirements

• Current registration or entitlement to be registered with the Irish Medical Council & Participation in a Professional Competence Scheme and ongoing maintenance of same at the time of application.

• Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine or equivalent. Where the examination has already been passed but the qualification has not been conferred, documentary evidence will be required to support this.

• Entry on the Medical Councils Register of Medical Specialists in Occupational Medicine at the time of application.

• Currently working in a broadly based clinical Occupational Medicine setting with a minimum 2 years full time experience within the last 3 years, which must include case management, health surveillance & immunisations.

• Driving Licence and availability for travel to periodic immunisation clinics (half day clinics, no overnights or out of hours).
