The Orthoptist, Senior will:

Professional / Clinical
* Conduct Orthoptic assessments as required in any part of Primary Care Services in line with best practice.
* Conduct follow-up assessment on screening clinics of children referred from public health nurses and Medical Officers and other referral sources as may be determined.
* Initiate and supervise treatment of amblyopia and strabismus.
* Provide if requested by the Community Ophthalmologists any additional ophthalmic investigations including, Visual Field Testing, Ophthalmic Imaging including fundus photography, optical coherent tomography.
* Will be able to:
o Distinguish false positive referrals from screening and interact with screening staff to minimise occurrence of these
o Interpret the results of Orthoptic assessments and provide recommendations and reports to other health and educational professionals as necessary
o Provide counselling to patients, relatives and carers on Orthoptic conditions
o Organise onward referral if necessary to other professionals and voluntary services, and to communicate with them on an ongoing basis as necessary
o Monitor Orthoptic problems on an ongoing basis informing the client and/or family and the professionals involved, on any changes
* Conduct under the supervision of the Community Ophthalmologist, or Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Orthoptic Clinics when required:
o Ensuring that standards of clinical practice are maintained
o Performing clinical audit studies as required
o Perform all clinical duties in accordance with directives issued
o Provide the clinical/administrative manager with reports as required e.g. monthly metric submission
o Maintain a record of work activity
* Document client records in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies, and data confidentiality.
* Ensure that professional standards are maintained in relation to confidentiality ethics and legislation.
* Liaise and coordinate with other HSE / health services involved in the management of clients with Orthoptic problems.
* Develop a close working relationship with Orthoptic colleagues at local hospitals for the transfer of patients requiring Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon review or strabismus surgery.
* Work as a team with other senior Orthoptists.
* Monitor waiting lists ensuring safe and efficient service delivery.
* Support and supervise staff, as appropriate in accordance with HR policy and procedures.
* Develop protocols, patient care plans, goal setting, outcome measurement and participate in research and developments in Orthoptics.
* Attend as directed / required at any Clinic, Out Patients Department, Health Service Executive Hospital or other location which has an agreement with the Health Service Executive for the provision of such services.
* Plan and manage resources efficiently in assigned areas of responsibility.
* Work within own scope of professional competence in line with principles of best practice, professional conduct and clinical governance.
* Seek advice of relevant personnel when appropriate / as required.
* Be responsible for managing own caseload and for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment programmes for service users according to service standards.

Education & Training
* Organise and participate as required in training courses and update for other professionals including the identification of amblyopia and ocular misalignment.
* Present training and relevant Orthoptic information when requested.
* Provide Orthoptic education to undergraduate Orthoptic students in conjunction with the lead clinical tutor if situation arises.
* Engage in personal development planning and performance review for self and others as required.
* Maintain standards of practice and levels of clinical knowledge by participating in continuous professional development initiatives and attendance at relevant courses as appropriate.
