Job Description

Our client is looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated Clinical Nurse Manager 1 (CNM1). The successful person will assume clinical responsibility for leading and managing a nursing team while taking responsibility for the standard and quality of nursing care in the designated area. An excellent understanding of mental health nursing, comprehensive assessment skills and the ability to promote teamwork are key elements of this role.

Working hours: this is a full-time permanent post working 7 x 12 hour shifts per fortnight on Day duty.

Principal duties and responsibilities include:

• Manage resident care to the highest professional standards, using an evidence based care planning approach to ensure that the physical, mental, psychological, social, spiritual and cultural needs of residents and families are met.

• Liaise and collaborate with other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that high quality holistic care is provided to residents and their families.

• Keep up to date with changing policies, practices and innovations in mental health nursing and contribute to, and be supportive of, on-going professional development and service development.

• Provide a high level of professional leadership, demonstrating clinical competencies and expertise in nursing care. Display a sound knowledge of symptom management at all times both physically and mentally.

• Take an active part in delivery of care.

• Participate in team meetings and family meetings on resident care as required.

• Act as a resource to nursing staff in person centred care planning and evaluations.

• Be familiar with and ensure that all staff are familiar with and adhere to Highfield Healthcare policies/procedures.

• Evaluate and manage the implementation of best practice policies and procedures.

• Ensure that each resident and their family have individual and on-going assessments of needs and implementing appropriate measures with time framed evaluations

Create a good learning environment by keeping up to date with new developments in nursing and by supporting open discussion.

• Provide support and supervision to the frontline staff where appropriate in order to assist them in their role.

• Ensure compliance with legal and professional requirements and documentation

• Ensure compliance of all staff with medication incident reporting and facilitate learning of same.

• Conduct all duties and communications in a professional, efficient and confidential manner.

• Foster and develop a spirit of teamwork.

• Maintain a high standard of work performance, attendance and punctuality.

Management/ Administration

• To effectively manage your assigned unit according to Highfield Healthcare policies, procedures and standards.

• In collaboration with the DON manage all resources efficiently and effectively.

• Liaise closely with all other departments including Housekeeping, Catering and Maintenance with regard to residents and unit needs.

• Ensure that appropriate, accurate and concise records are maintained at all times including staff mandatory training records, planned/unplanned leave and duty rosters.

• Respond promptly to comments, complaints or issues raised by residents or their families.

• Attend regular staff meetings and arrange unit meetings.

• Participate in MDT meetings for interdisciplinary communication which are respectful and receptive of contributions from all staff.

• Promote a relaxed and comfortable environment, which reflects organisations Statement of Purpose and Values.

• Lead in the development of goals and objectives by involvement in committees as required or requested.


Candidates must:

• Be registered on the General Division of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

• Have a minimum of 2 years post qualification experience in care of the older person.

• Be flexible in relation to their work pattern and assigned unit of care.

• Have a clear, open and friendly communication style with the ability to respond quickly and appropriately across a variety of situations.

Have excellent communication and organizational skills as well as the ability to efficiently and effectively manage human resources

• Have proven clinical leadership, a clear commitment to person-centred care, mentoring ability and strong interpersonal skills.

• Have fluent spoken and written English.


• Minimum of 1 years post registration experience at management level.

• Have successfully completed a management course or other relevant post registration course.
