Job Description

To be responsible for assisting in the management and co-ordination of quality patient care.

Job Summary

In conjunction with the CNM II, provide leadership in the delivery of patient care by leading, managing & developing the nursing staff to ensure excellence in patient care through a well educated and highly motivated team of carers and the effective and efficient use of resources.

Responsibilities/Service Delivery

Assessing, planning, delivering and continuously evaluating patients’ care.

Providing clinical advice, direction and support to nursing staff to enable the development and maintenance of a quality nursing service.

Leading, managing and motivating the nursing team, delegating responsibility and accountability to staff nurses/care assistants as appropriate at the direction of and in conjunction with CNM II.

Ensure all nursing and non-nursing procedures are carried out professionally and safely.

Implementing and monitoring medication policy in particular the safe custody and recording of controlled drugs and ensure the Nurse in Charge carries the keys of the medication press/drug trolley on her person according to Hospital Policy.

Adhering to hospital policy regarding patients personal property.

Ensuring all documentation relating to patients is accurately maintained in patients medical record, adhering to the hospital documentation policy and hospital accepted abbreviation list.

Supervising and influencing standards of professionalism on the Ward e.g. confidentiality, dress code, hospitality and diplomacy.

Deputising for CNM II when necessary i.e. ward management, staff meeting.

Carrying out any other relevant duties as may be assigned to the post from time to time.

Participate in our National Metrics Audits and ensure standards and quality improvements are implemented to improve the standard of care in National Metrics Compliance.

Administration

Ensuring all Adverse Occurrences/or difficulties concerning patients and staff are reported to CNM I/Director of Nursing, documenting full details as per Hospital Policy while being aware of legal requirements and implications.

Assessing, reporting and responding to complaints from patients and relatives.

Maintaining good communication with all staff and patients.

Co-ordinating the activities of your ward liaising effectively with all departments within the Hospital as well as external organisations to ensure the delivery of a quality service to the patients

Aiming to minimise accidents and untoward occurrences as far as possible (Health and Safety at Work Act 1989) & ensure safety procedures are developed and managed to comply with statutory obligations.

Ensuring that all damaged equipment is speedily withdrawn for repair or replacement.

Carrying out Consultants instructions re patient care. Communicate and delegate tasks to the Staff Nurses so that Consultants instructions are implemented when necessary.

Executing instructions as directed by the multi disciplinary team.

Maintaining good communication and liaise effectively with all departments within the Hospital as well as relevant external organisations to ensure the delivery of a quality service to the patients.

Resources

Monitoring and responding to staffing levels according to patient dependency and activity of the ward. Assisting with devising rosters and annual leave/time off to ensure adequate staffing levels and cost effective cover in conjunction with CNM II.

Maintain and update daily the TAMS system, facilitating flexibility in ward roster if necessary.

Person Specification

Be a Registered General Nurse on the current NMBI Register

Have 3- 5 years relevant experience

Ideally have completed or be pursuing a relevant Management qualification

Have experience of working in a multi-professional environment
