Location: Clonmel, Co. Tipperary
Contract Type: 1 year contract, possible extension
Hours: Full-Time, 35 hours per week
Salary: In line with HSE Senior Dietitian pay scales

Excel Recruitment are delighted to be recruiting a Senior Dietitian (Senior Grade) for a full-time agency contract based in an acute hospital in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. This is an excellent opportunity to join a supportive, well-established dietetics team and provide advanced clinical dietetic care across acute inpatient services, while contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement, and the development of junior colleagues.

As a Senior Grade Dietitian

You will be based within a busy acute hospital, primarily covering an acute medical ward and supporting safe, timely nutrition care from admission through discharge. You will work closely with consultants, nursing teams, speech and language therapy, pharmacy, catering, and the wider multidisciplinary team, taking a lead role in complex case management and clinical decision-making.

As a Senior Grade Dietitian, you will also be expected to support and guide Staff Grade Dietitians within the service.

Ideal candidate

You will have worked in an acute hospital environment with a medical and/or surgical background (a mix is welcome).

Experience in other areas (e.g., maternity, paediatrics, diabetes, eating disorders, or other specialist services) would be an advantage, and there may be some flexibility to provide cross-cover into different areas depending on service needs.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced dietetic assessment, diagnosis, and nutrition care planning for patients with complex needs, with a primary focus on an acute medical ward.
  • Lead delivery of evidence-based nutrition interventions and education for patients and families, adapting for clinical complexity and risk.
  • Lead and support acute nutrition pathways (e.g., malnutrition screening and escalation, dysphagia nutrition care in collaboration with SLT, peri-operative nutrition, enteral feeding pathways), in line with local policies and best practice.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants, nurses, midwives, and the wider MDT; contribute to discharge planning and continuity of care.
  • Maintain high-quality clinical documentation and governance standards in line with hospital policies and CORU requirements.
  • Contribute to service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives; support implementation of guidelines and standard operating procedures.
  • Provide clinical supervision, informal mentoring, and day-to-day support to Staff Grade Dietitians and students, helping to maintain high standards of acute dietetic care.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and reflective practice, contributing to a learning culture within the department.

Requirements

  • BSc/MSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics (or equivalent).
  • Registered with CORU (essential). INDI membership desirable.
  • Demonstrable post-qualification dietetic experience within an acute or hospital setting, including management of complex caseloads.
  • Strong acute inpatient experience with a medical and/or surgical background; experience in complex nutrition support (enteral feeds/ONS and exposure to PN) is advantageous.
  • Additional experience in areas such as maternity, paediatrics, diabetes, eating disorders, or other specialties is beneficial, with potential opportunities for cross-cover depending on service needs.
  • Evidence of involvement in audit, quality improvement, guideline development, or service redesign.
  • Strong communication, organisation, and time-management skills, with the confidence to influence and collaborate across the MDT.
  • Ability to work autonomously and support/guide junior colleagues while maintaining a patient-centred approach.
